Cast Your Vote: UP Collective T-Shirt Design

During last night’s member meeting, members submitted t-shirt designs for the collective to vote on. After narrowing it down to the design thought to be simple, yet conceptually strong, everyone wanted to see a revised version with a of couple tweaks. The original design mimicked the iconic “I heart NY” t-shirts, but instead read “I heart art.” The group liked it, but decided that it would be good to integrate the UP Collective logo as well as change the font and color. The final t-shirt design will be screen printed by UP Collective member, Audrey Fox at Rural Rooster, and will be for sale at our events during the week of SXSW.

At Water’s Edge: Photographs by Glenn Twiggs in the main gallery, two UP Collective members, Mary H. Chriss and Christine Rasmussen will each have a solo show in our North and South wing galleries. If you are interested in having your own solo show in one of the UP Collective galleries, consider joining.

East Austin Studio Tour (November 2012), we will be gathering UP Collective members as well as anyone from the Austin community who would like to participate to create as many unique flags as possible, to be strung together and installed around Austin’s east side during the studio tour. The aim of the project is to grow UP Collective’s community through collaboration and to serve as visual representation of UP Collective’s community impact on east Austin’s eclectic landscape. Each flag will be photographed to be featured on our website with a link to the artist’s name and personal website (if desired).

We will have four Art Social nights dedicated to creating flags together and/or you can download the flag template to create as many flags as you would like from home using fabric, canvas, vinyl, or any material that will withstand being hung outdoors for 2-3 weeks in November 2012.

Art is not about thinking something up. It is about the opposite–getting something down. The directions are important here. If we are trying to think something up, we are straining to reach for something that’s just beyond our grasp, “up there, in the stratosphere, where art lives on high . . .” When we get something down, there is no strain. We’re not doing; we’re getting. Someone or something else is doing the doing. Instead of researching for inventions, we are engaged in listening. Art is an act of tuning in and dropping down the well. It is as though all the stories, painting, music, and performances in the world live just under the surface of our normal consciousness. Like and underground river, they flow through us as a stream of ideas that we can tap down into. As artists, we drop down the well into the stream. We hear what’s down there and we act on it–more like taking dictation than anything fancy having to do with art.

With one of the world’s most dynamic tropical environments and a tumultuous cultural history, Brazil is a country whose beauty can obscure it’s economic and social realities. Politics and the Amazon River have dramatically shaped the lives of the Brazilian people and have left an indelible mark on the country’s social landscape. During Austin photographer Glenn Twiggs’s travels within the country, he began to chronicle the palatable narrative of change within Brazil which resulted in the exhibition At Water’s Edge.

At Water’s Edge will run at UP Collective Studios and Gallery from February 10th to February 26th and was co-curated by Ricardo Santiago Jaén and Mary Caitlin Greenwood.

The opening reception will be February 10th from 7-10 PM with food provided by Rio’s Brazilian Cafe.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our first member meeting of 2012! We reflected on the successful Christmas Bazaar put on by UP Collective member, Lesli Marshall, introduced new building renovations that are currently in the works, presented new application forms available here, announced our line up of exhibitions for Spring 2012, planned for our upcoming one year anniversary party, and UP Collective member, Audrey Fox, presented guidelines for our 2012 UP Collective T-Shirt contest. Flex Space at Pump Project Art Complex on Austin’s east side before January 21st to check out the newly-opened exhibition curated by our very own, Mary Caitlin Greenwood. The exhibition features the work of photographer Mattew Genitempo and sculptor Travis LaMothe, both exploring the dynamics between humans and nature.

Many of our in-house artists will join in on the party to sketch and serve as (dressed) models. We have plenty of chairs, easels, and floor space to accommodate a crowd.

E.A.S.T. is always such a great way for artists and the community to interface directly with each other. Visitors feel more relaxed being in the casual environment of the artist’s studio as opposed to a gallery or museum. Plus, people LOVE to hear the stories behind the art. We’ve had the most fun telling people about our work and sharing the inspirations and process. Wouldn’t you rather have a piece of art made by an artist who you had a chance to meet and talk with in their studio? So excited that we still have another whole weekend of E.A.S.T.! Be sure to stop by for the last weekend of E.A.S.T. (November 19th & 20th)…we will be open Saturday and Sunday from 11am-6pm. We have a great variety of interesting and affordable artwork, ranging from original paintings, sculpture, prints, collage, and mixed media.
